How To Straighten Your Hair With A Flat Iron

Today, the flat iron has quickly become one of the most popular tools for styling hair. As a matter of fact, it comes in a close second to the blow dryer and is used by both men and women to achieve the looks that they are longing for. When you have the desire for straight hair, you may turn to a flat iron as a useful tool. However, it is best that you learn a couple of the tips and tricks of using a flat iron in order to get the results that you are looking for.

When using a flat iron to straighten hair, a number of people like to use some sort of styling product before proceeding. There are some great sprays on the market that are made to help protect hair from thermal styling. If you choose to apply such a spray to your hair, then be sure that you wet your hair with it from the roots all the way to the tips to properly protect your hair from the heat that you will be applying. Then it is important to let your hair dry completely before straightening. While some flat irons claim to straighten hair when wet, you will get the absolute best results from straightening your hair while it is dry.

Take a comb or brush and gently remove any tangles that you may have in your hair. Then you can take clips and section your hair off so that you can start on the bottom of your head first. Depending on the length and type of your hair and the size plates of your flat iron, you will want to start with about a 1 to 2 inch section of your hair. Take care to clamp the flat iron down as close to your scalp as you possibly can while remaining parallel to your head. Slowly pull your flat iron all the way down the length of your hair until the section goes all the way through the flat iron plates.

Repeat the process to straighten each section with the flat iron. As you finish a level of sectioned off hair, simply section off the next layer up and keep working. It is always best to work from the bottom up to the top, although you are sure to find a process that is most comfortable for you. Once you get used to the straightening process with your flat iron, you are sure to see that it will become easier to do over time and you will become very fast at it!

Depending on the texture of your hair and the look that you are hoping for, you may find the need to go over some of the sections more than once. However, it is important that you do not repeat the process to straighten each section excessively as heat can damage your hair over time. This is why so many people opt to use thermal protective sprays on their hair. If you do not own a thermal protectant, you may find that your current favorite hairstyling product line will have one that will work beautifully.

Once you have learned the best way to straighten your hair using a flat iron, you can then work to create new styles depending on your mood. Since a flat iron is such a versatile styling tool, you can use it to straighten in addition to creating curls, flips and even twists with your hair.
